Terracotta Pot Fridge – Who Needs Eskom?

A pot-in-pot refrigerator, clay pot cooler, a Zeer pot, or as it is more commonly known, a Terracotta pot fridge is an evaporative cooling refrigeration device that does not use electricity. Considering how Eskom is forever asking South Africans to pay more for electricity than they physically cannot deliver and therefore our regular rolling blackouts in SA, this might be the next viable solution for many households.

This isn’t new. These are old techniques that have been used for centuries across Africa as well as the middle-east. If it works, it works. All you would need is a few Terracotta pots in various sizes, some sand, and a cloth – or a smaller pot lid for the covering on top.

What would you need for your Terracotta Pot fridge?

Some pots in various sizes
Some Sand
A Cloth covering or a Pot lid – depends on what you have really.
Optional extra, pretty black rocks to make it look nice – but not a must have.
If you want to be ‘extra’ you can also create a nice stand with wheels on it ot move it around easier. But seriously, you do not have to do all of that.
