Disney’s The Magic Box at Montecasino Johannesburg is a masterfully crafted homage to the stories and songs that have shaped our childhoods and continue to inspire wonder across generations. With its all-South African cast and an innovative production design, this 90-minute journey through Disney’s centennial legacy left me in awe and i certainly sang a long!
From the very first notes, it was clear that this was a labour of love. The production uses light, shadows, and projections to transform the stage into a living, breathing canvas. The clever use of lighting to create dynamic shadows was nothing short of hypnotic – a visual element that added a layer of magic to the storytelling. These moments felt like a direct nod to the artistry of animation, a delightful tribute to Disney’s roots. Also – STEAM BOAT WILLIE, was epic to see.
For me, the highlight of the evening was the musical medleys from Encanto and Coco. These two films hold a special place in my heart, and hearing their vibrant songs performed live was a deeply emotional experience. The cast’s rendition of We Don’t Talk About Bruno had the audience buzzing with excitement, while Remember Me from Coco brought tears to my eyes with its heartfelt delivery. It was a reminder of Disney’s unique ability to weave stories that resonate universally.
Ashley Scott as Mara carried the show with grace and charm, taking the audience on her magical journey through different Disney worlds. Her vocals were impeccable, as were those of the ensemble, particularly Cindy-Ann Abrahams and Mthokozisi Emkay Khanyile, whose voices lent emotional depth to the performances. Dance captain Nicolette Fernandes also stood out, leading the ensemble with precision and energy in every movement.
However, the absence of an interval proved challenging. While I understand the desire to maintain an uninterrupted flow of magic, 90 minutes is a long time to sit still, particularly for younger audience members. A brief intermission would have allowed for a moment to reflect and recharge without detracting from the immersive experience.
That said, the pacing was mostly well-handled, with seamless transitions between scenes. The production team deserves immense credit for the technical mastery on display. Costumes, puppetry, and choreography blended together to create an enchanting tapestry, with iconic characters like Mickey Mouse, Minnie, and Goofy brought to life in a way that delighted children and adults alike.
The Magic Box is not a traditional musical with a linear narrative. Instead, it’s a sensory experience that weaves together over 75 Disney songs and countless cultural touchpoints. This approach won’t appeal to everyone – some might wish for more focus on specific stories or characters. However, for those who revel in Disney’s extensive back catalogue, the variety is a treat.
Ultimately, The Magic Box is a visual and auditory feast, a celebration of Disney’s enduring legacy that bridges generations. It’s a show that demands to be experienced with loved ones, as its emotional resonance is magnified by the shared joy of those around you. While there are minor aspects that could be improved, they pale in comparison to the sheer wonder on display.
