In a world often divided by prejudice and misunderstanding, the Johannesburg Queer Chorus (JQC) stands as a beacon of hope, inclusivity, and empowerment. In the bustling city of Johannesburg, known for its rich cultural heritage and diverse communities, the JQC shines as the city’s vibrant heartbeat. Its members, unified under the LGBTQIA+ banner, are a testament to the beauty of diversity and the strength that can be found in acceptance.

This June, the JQC is poised to embark on a journey that will take them from the familiar streets of Johannesburg to the historic city of Bologna, Italy. They’ve been invited to perform at the world-renowned Various Voices Festival, a prestigious event that celebrates the global LGBTQIA+ choral movement. But before they say “Ciao!” to their home city, the JQC has a special performance planned just for their local supporters.
Dubbed “JQC: The Road We Travel“, this one-night-only event promises an evening of enchanting melodies and inspiring performances. The songs in their repertoire are more than just beautiful music; they are a narrative of their journey, both as individuals and as a choir. Each note echoes with the pride, joy, and resilience of the queer community, their voices resonating with the strength of their shared experiences.

Set to take place on the 4th of June, 2023, at the prestigious Deutsche Internationale Schule’s Aula Hall, this event is not to be missed. Tickets are priced at an affordable R100, and can be purchased via this link: JQC: The Road We Travel Tickets.
The Johannesburg Queer Chorus is more than just a choir. It is an inclusive, supportive community that welcomes people of all genders and sexual orientations. From lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, asexual and/or genderqueer individuals, to their friends and allies, the JQC provides a safe, empowering space for those seeking a choral community.
As a non-profit organisation, the JQC is guided by a Board of Directors and managed by a Member Committee, both comprising of volunteers who work tirelessly to uphold the choir’s strong democratic and ethical principles. Their mission goes beyond creating beautiful music; they aim to foster a sense of fellowship and empowerment within the LGBTQIA+ community, utilising the universal language of music as a tool for communication and unity.
In the face of adversity, the Johannesburg Queer Chorus sings with pride, their voices carrying a message of love, acceptance, and unity. As they prepare to represent South Africa on the global stage, let us join them in celebrating their journey, their talent, and their courage.
