Axie Infinity is a wildly popular metaverse-style blockchain game. It is a trading and battling game that allows players to collect, breed, raise, battle, and trade creatures known as “Axies” (characters based on axolotl), which are digitized as NFTs. One of its primary cryptocurrencies, the AXS token is doing ridiculously well recently. However, there has been some criticism about it being more of a gambling platform than anything else or a typical ‘get rich quick’ scheme. Judge for yourself though, besides it could be fun to try out.
Axies, the creatures in the game are fierce creatures that love to battle, build and hunt for treasure. Each Axie is a non-fungible token (NFT), which means it is a unique digital collectible in its own right. Players can breed and battle Axies, as well as complete quests and farm resources.
Axie Infinity uses cutting-edge technology called the Blockchain to reward players for their engagement. You can also earn AXS tokens by playing and using them to decide the future of the game!
What makes Axies infinity different is that it is a new type of game, partially owned and operated by its players in essence. In Axie Infinity’s virtual world of Lunacia, players steer colorful, blob-like creatures called Axies to acquire two kinds of coins. Smooth Love Potions (SLP) are awarded for successful battles and can be cashed out or used in the game to breed new Axies. Axie Infinity Shards (AXS) can be earned in seasonal tournaments or for selling Axies in the game’s marketplace. AXS can be cashed out too, but like other governance tokens, they’re designed to function like shares: Sky Mavis says holders will eventually be able to vote on new game features or corporate spending proposals.
Virtual goods with real-world value have been a staple of gaming for years now. The difference between Axie and most other big in-game markets is that Axie encourages players to cash out and gives them the tools and transparency to do so. Instead of a semi-sanctioned peer-to-peer exchange on an unauthorized third-party marketplace, Axie players can take their SLP and AXS directly to a major crypto exchange and sell for whatever’s on offer.

How to download and play?
To download Axie Infinity head over to https://axieinfinity.com/ – and follow the provided. It is available for download on desktop or mobile.
However is it really that easy to do?
No, no it is not. I tried but failed. Firstly I had to download and create a Ronin wallet, pretty straight forward right? But then I had to download the Mavis hub platform where the actual game will be played on. In order to use that platform, you need to log in with your Ronin wallet, and then in order to start playing the game you need to purchase three Axies via Ethereum.
You cannot play the game without having three Axies purchased.
If you had Ethereum in your Ronin wallet, it would be done and dusted you are ready to go. If you don’t (like me) it forces you to deposit via the MetaMask wallet (a second wallet… sigh) and create an account there to then transfer money into the Ronin wallet in order to buy the Axies so you can start the gameplay.
But wait… that is not all. You have to use either Wyre or Transak to deposit money depending on if your bank, your bank card, and your country have eligibility. (Wyre supports ZAR).
Considering you need the three Axies to start playing the game, it might be worth mentioning that you will need to deposit enough Ethereum into your wallet that would cover the costs of a set of three Axies. Currently, at the time of writing this article, that is an estimated R23 000.

The amount you need to spend to start the game is subject to change at any given time cause its a virtual world, digital currency and we all know nothing is certain in life.
