In order to get to know The Honest Apron a little bit better and learn about the passion behind the art, I decided ‘hey, why not just have a quick chat with Angelique?!’ So I did… Let’s get to know a bit more about her and her bakery.
Angelique, The Honest Apron is exceeding people’s expectations, the reviews are amazing, and the designs of your baked treats are so refreshing to see. Who is the team behind the honest apron and how was it started?
“In 2020 at the height of the pandemic myself (Angelique) and a friend of mine (Farrah) started The Honest Apron. We were both unemployed and needed to make an income and so our business was born. I am a graphic designer by trade and she is a photographer, we have an absolute love for food and it branched over into baked goods. In 2021 she immigrated to Dubai and I took over and ran The Honest Apron myself and still currently do. It is a one-woman operation and I am the Jill of all trades.”
How long have you been vegan?
“I went vegan in 2017, this year will mark 5 years of being vegan.”
What is your philosophy when it comes to baking and designing your baked goods?
“I strive to give my clients a unique piece of edible art. It is important to me to produce a good quality product that doesn’t just look good but that tastes amazing as well.”
What has been one of the biggest challenges you had to face with being an online vegan home bakery?
“The biggest challenge for me has been load shedding. As a small home-based business it really does add a lot of stress.”
Your creations are fun and exciting and some are quite intricate, has there been any specific design over the years that remains your favourite?
“My favourite design even though it is hard to choose as they all have a special place in my heart has to be the psychedelic lady with the third eye cake.”

What has surprised you the most about The Honest Apron?
“As a self-taught vegan baker, I never thought I would have the opportunities I have had. Through my bakes, I have even met very well know South African celebrities that I admire.”
Do you believe that we have reached a point in South Africa where it’s easier to be vegan? Or is South Africa a bit behind with the rest of the world?
I definitely believe South Africa has come a long way since I went vegan in 2017. The change is definitely there, it might be a bit slow but progress takes time.
I know you cannot give away all of your beautiful secrets of baking, but for some readers, they might immediately think ‘hold on, what do you replace eggs with when baking?‘ Can you give a tip or two for those willing to try a kinder lifestyle?
“This is the question that everyone always asks. Baking without eggs is easier than you think. Because baking is a science your “egg” replacement will depend on the recipe you use. Replacements vary from the most common one “Aquafaba” which is the brine from a can of chickpeas to flax meal, applesauce, chia seeds, and the list goes on.”
You have ‘exploded’ on social media in 2021, what are your plans for 2022 for The Honest Apron?
“As a designer and a perfectionist, my aim is to just keep bringing edible art to the world. It’s an extension of my heart and it brings me so much joy to see people happy when they receive an order from me.”
Are you team Cupcake or team Scone?
“I have a severe sweet tooth so I am definitely team Cupcake all the way!”
Are you team Cookies and Milk or team Coffee and Cake?
“Coffee has powered me through many late nights of working on bakes and who can resist a slice of delicious cake.”
Lastly, I am sure there are many readers that would love to get in touch with you and see what you get up to next. What is the best way to get in touch with you and hopefully taste one of your amazing creations soon?
“You can contact me through my social media pages, email, or WhatsApp. I am currently in the process of creating a website, once that is up orders can be placed through there as well making the process even easier.”
