Marnus Botha is not just another contestant in the prestigious Mr. South Africa competition; he is a man with a vision, driven by a deep sense of purpose and a desire to inspire positive change in South Africa. With a background in strategic planning at the City of Cape Town and a passion for community service, Marnus embodies the qualities of a true leader, ready to take on the mantle of Mr. South Africa.

A Journey of Purpose and Potential
Marnus has long harboured the ambition to participate in Mr. South Africa, a platform he sees as a way for the “ordinary average South African guy to do and achieve extraordinary things.” However, it was only recently that he felt the time was right to embark on this journey. “I’ve known from a very young age that I have this God-given untapped potential within me that needs to be shared with the world,” he reflects. For Marnus, Mr. South Africa is more than just a title; it’s an opportunity to motivate, inspire, and serve the people who need it the most.
Inside the Mr. South Africa Competition
Marnus entered the competition through an online selection process and was thrilled to be chosen as one of the Top 10 contestants (at the time of publishing). The Mr. South Africa competition is not just about looks or charm; it involves a rigorous mentoring process, various challenges, charity work, public voting, and formal interviews. Contestants represent local South African brands, participate in photoshoots, and engage with their communities, all while being guided to become positive male role models in society. The final round, featuring the Top 10 contestants, will be broadcast live from Vodacom World in Johannesburg, where they will compete in swimwear and formal wear and answer questions about current affairs in South Africa.
Why Marnus Wants to be Mr. South Africa
Marnus’s motivation for competing in Mr. South Africa goes beyond personal ambition. He wants to use the platform to inspire people on both national and international levels. “I want to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves,” he says. Marnus is particularly passionate about motivating the youth to register to vote and to advocate for a government that truly serves its people. With his deep interest in infrastructure and service delivery, Marnus believes that being Mr. South Africa will allow him to make a significant impact, especially in his role at the City of Cape Town.
The Road Ahead
The journey to the Mr. South Africa title is challenging, with public voting accounting for 25% of the overall scoring. Marnus has successfully reached the Top 10, and he is calling on the public to support him by voting on the Imperial Vote website to ultimately become the next Mr South Africa. One lucky voter even stands a chance to win a one-carat diamond from Uwe Koetter Jewellers, worth R65,000—the biggest voters’ prize in the history of Mr. South Africa.
A Champion for a Cause
Marnus has also aligned himself with a noble cause during his Mr. South Africa journey. He has partnered with Love Your Nuts, a registered non-profit organization in South Africa that raises awareness about testicular cancer. Through his involvement with Love Your Nuts, Marnus hopes to educate communities about this often-overlooked disease, particularly among young men. “If I can save someone’s life with just one post on social media, then why not!” he exclaims.
A Career in Service
Marnus’s professional life is as impressive as his community involvement. Since September 2022, he has been working at the City of Cape Town in the Strategic Planning Branch, where he plays a crucial role in addressing infrastructure backlogs and prioritizing projects that are essential for the city’s growth and resilience. His work involves reviewing and refining strategies to ensure that the City of Cape Town’s infrastructure meets the needs of its residents, now and in the future.

Get to Know Marnus Botha: An Exclusive Interview
I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Marnus Botha to learn more about the man behind the title. Here’s what he had to say:
What’s the most unexpected skill or hobby you have that people might not know about?
“I’m not sure if it is considered a skill, but I memorize automated passwords and just keep using the ones the computer or website provided to me instead of changing it to my cat’s name or birthday, for example.”
If you could have dinner with any historical figure or celebrity, who would it be and why?
“I would choose Nelson Mandela. His remarkable journey from political prisoner to the president of South Africa is a testament to resilience and the power of forgiveness. Mandela’s leadership in the fight against apartheid and his ability to unify a deeply divided nation demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to justice and human dignity. I think sharing a meal with him would offer invaluable insights into his strategies for overcoming immense challenges. I mean, we all face challenges every day, so I think his advice on how to overcome them would be invaluable.”
What’s your go-to activity or ritual to relax and unwind after a busy day?
“I would definitely say going to the gym! Most people wouldn’t describe it as relaxing after a busy day, but for me, it has become such an integral part of my daily life that I can’t go without it. It helps to clear my mind of any negativity and generally just makes me happy.”
If you could instantly master any new skill, what would it be and how do you think it would help you as Mr. South Africa?
“Speaking multiple South African languages. I think as Mr. South Africa, it can significantly enhance my ability to connect with diverse communities and advocate effectively for national unity. South Africa is a nation rich in linguistic diversity and represents a broad spectrum of cultures and traditions. Mastering several languages will allow me to engage more authentically with people from various backgrounds, fostering deeper trust and understanding.”
If you had to choose a soundtrack or theme song for your journey in the Mr. South Africa competition, what song would it be and why?
“I would choose ‘Rise Up’ by Andra Day. The song is a powerful anthem of resilience and perseverance, reflecting the determination and spirit needed to navigate the challenges and responsibilities of the competition. Its uplifting lyrics and soulful melody capture the essence of overcoming obstacles and striving for excellence, qualities that are essential for the role of Mr. South Africa. The message of rising above difficulties and remaining hopeful aligns perfectly with the journey of representing and inspiring others, making it an ideal choice to symbolize the aspirations and dedication required for the title.”
What’s one thing you’ve learned about yourself during the Mr. South Africa competition that surprised you?
“I think one thing that surprised me was my self-confidence and ability to be adaptable. The competition has presented unexpected challenges and moments of pressure that required quick thinking and emotional strength. I discovered a newfound ability to stay calm under pressure, adapt to changing circumstances, and maintain a positive outlook even when faced with setbacks. This experience has revealed an inner strength and determination that I hadn’t fully recognized before, showing me that I can handle complex situations with confidence and perseverance.”
What’s a cause or issue close to your heart that you haven’t had the chance to talk about yet, but would love to bring more awareness to?
“I am a big advocate for the small-town people with big dreams! Inspiring small-town people with big dreams during my Mr. South Africa journey involves embodying the belief that no dream is too big, regardless of one’s starting point or background. By sharing my own journey and experiences, I aim to demonstrate that ambition and determination can overcome geographical and social barriers. Showcasing stories of individuals who have succeeded against the odds and providing practical advice on pursuing goals can ignite hope and motivate others to take bold steps toward their aspirations. Encouraging a culture of support and resilience within the small rural towns of our country can create a ripple effect, empowering residents to chase their dreams with renewed confidence and vigour.”
If you were a superhero, but your only power was something completely ridiculous (like the ability to turn vegetables into chocolate), what would your superpower be and how would you use it?
“If I were a superhero, I would instantly turn any traffic light into a disco ball! I’m all about positive energy, so I would use my power to bring joy and positivity to people being angry and stressed while stuck in traffic. By transforming mundane traffic stops into vibrant, impromptu dance parties, I’d lift spirits and create a sense of community. Traffic jams would become opportunities for spontaneous fun and connection, turning otherwise frustrating moments into memorable and uplifting experiences.”
If you could swap lives with any fictional character for a day, who would it be and what’s the first thing you’d do in their shoes?
“I’d choose to be Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man. The first thing I’d do in his shoes would be to suit up in the Iron Man armour and take it for a high-speed flight to fight crime in our country!”
Marnus Botha is more than just a contestant in Mr. South Africa; he is a man on a mission, ready to inspire and lead by example.
