The season of rejuvenation and bloom, Spring, brings with it an enchanting experience for theatre-goers of all ages. The renowned Peoples Theatre has announced another delightful rendition of its popular series, Storybook Theatre. This magical presentation promises a splendid theatre experience, unravelling timeless tales we’ve grown up listening to and loving. These tales include captivating classics such as ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ and ‘The Princess and the Pea’.

From 20 September to 8 October, the Peoples Theatre invites everyone to be a part of this bewitching world where cherished book stories spring to life. The force behind this vision is the creative partnership of Jill Girard and Keith Smith. This duo, recognised for their dedication to children’s theatre, is eager to reintroduce children to the magic of these age-old stories. Girard remarked, “Our primary motivation remains to familiarise children with the marvel of stories. We aim to breathe life into these stories that have been cherished through generations and provide children with an unforgettable experience, even after the play concludes.”
It’s not surprising that the Story Book Theatre series has garnered immense popularity over the years. The theatre experienced sold-out performances repeatedly. However, the events of 2022, heavily influenced by the repercussions of COVID19, made it challenging for the theatre to continue this traditional annual feature. So, the return of this beloved series this year has created a palpable excitement in the air.
The spellbinding experience will be elevated by the extraordinarily skilled cast. The audience will play a pivotal role in the theatrical display, adding a dimension of interactivity to the performance. Taking the lead in this immersive show are gifted actors Luciano Zuppa, Nonhlanhla ‘Noni’ Mkhonto, Raymond Skinner, and Sipho Hlongwane. These artists, with their extensive background in musical theatre, are no strangers to the stage of the Peoples Theatre.
These performers, equipped with their proficiency, will recreate the tales through engrossing narration, captivating music, dynamic movement, intriguing puppetry, and most importantly, stirring audience interaction. Keith Smith added, “Engaging the young audience directly amplifies their imaginative powers, ensuring they leave with an unforgettable, magical theatre memory.”
