It’s all happening at the fabulous Teatro, Montecasino, and it’s shaping up to be the event of the season. We’re talking classic Christmas carols with a twist, swing rhythms that’ll have you tapping along, and that magical Roxmouth charm that we all love. It’s a festive feast for the ears and the heart!
Curious to know more about the man behind the magic? I had a quick interview with Jonathan Roxmouth himself. We had a chat about everything from the inspiration behind “Swingle Bells” to his own festive traditions and what makes swing music so darn irresistible. So, settle in and get ready for some festive cheer and fascinating insights straight from Jonathan!

Tell us about the magic behind the scenes of your new album, ‘Swingle Bells’. Which tune really stood out for you in the process of arranging and recording, and what made it so special?
“We recorded it during Covid so the majority of the musicians hadn’t seen each other for ages so not was like a reunion. There was just a very special energy in the room that made me realise that a live show would be amazing. For me, Grown Up Christmas List is a highlight because the lyric is more relevant than ever in terms of seeing each other.”
Every artist faces a challenge or two. Whether it’s putting the album together, getting the right cover art, or simply reaching for perfection in all you do. What part of this album did you find to be a challenge?
“The arrangements were very tricky because achieving that Big Band sound requires a different way of writing the music. Besides the jazz element, having so much brass was initially intimidating but eventually addictive.”
Christmas albums are a staple for the festive season. What was the spark that lit the idea for Swingle Bells in your heart?
“I was doing a corporate event and Adam Howard was playing trumpet. He suggested a Christmas album as we had recorded nine albums together already. That he was the conductor of the Johannesburg Big Band was no coincidence. The next thing I knew we were recording a Christmas swing album!”
We’re intrigued by the name Swingle Bells! What is it about swing music that puts that smile on your face?
“Swing makes you tap your toes. You add sleigh bells to that and it is a natural fit.”
There’s always that one song that really brings the festive spirit to life. Which track on your album does that for you?
“It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. It’s not a title. It’s a fact!”
Do you have any personal Christmas traditions that you and/or your family do every year?
“Presents at midnight, Home Alone 1 and 2 as well as panettone French toast for breakfast on Christmas morning. There is nothing better.”
If you could ask for anything this Christmas, what would it be?
“Another concert series.”
Now, a very important question: Do you believe in Santa Claus and why is the answer yes?
“What’s not to believe in? We live in South Africa. The idea of one guy breaking into everyone’s house is not a stretch. The magic is that he adds. He doesn’t take away. That’s a Christmas miracle right there.”
When the idea of “Swingle Bells” rang in your ear, which idea came first, your album or your show?
“Both. The minute the band started to play I knew.”
What was the best Christmas present you ever received?
“The most beautiful ink drawing of the Disney Castle.”
Joining you on stage is a 19-piece Johannesburg Big Band, conducted by Adam Howard. How has rehearsals been going with such an epic team of people ready to make the shows exciting?
“I have been trying extremely emotional and inspired to work with people and not technology. The care, ethic and talent of this group of musicians makes me want to be a better performer.”
How do the special guest artists Timothy Moloi and Monique Steyn add their unique touch of local brilliance to the show?
“Timothy Moloi is South Africa’s Luther Vandross. A voice like silk and a heart like gold. Monique Steyn is a powerhouse and one of the most hardworking singers in the business. Between the two of them, you will have goosebumps and sore cheeks from smiling.”
And finally, let’s talk about your show, Swingle Bells. What can audiences expect when they tune in to experience the festive cheer?
“This is a Christmas swing show for everyone from 1 to 92 as the song says. There are traditional carols, non-traditional carols and a few surprises all with a Yuletide twist and the most swingin’ beat. Insane visuals, gorgeous sounds and the opportunity to be with your family.”

A huge thank you to Jonathan for sharing his thoughts, experiences, and the heart behind “Swingle Bells”. His passion for music and the festive season shines through in every word, reminding us all of the joy and warmth that this time of year brings.
