Step into a world where laughter dances with rhyme, and beloved characters leap off the page and onto the stage! This winter, prepare for a spectacular journey into the heart of the whimsical world of Dr Seuss in Peoples Theatre’s thrilling 2nd production of the year: Seussical the Musical Jr.

The theatre maestros Jill Girard and Keith Smith are over the moon to present this Broadway gem, aimed at tickling not only the fancies of our young ones, but also those of parents, and indeed, anyone with a love for joy, laughter, and a good ol’ theatrical jol.
Kick-starting with previews on Tuesday, 13th June, the grand curtain raises for the official opening on Youth Day, Friday 16th June at the Peoples Theatre. This spectacular show promises to sprinkle joy throughout the winter school holidays, with the grand finale scheduled for Sunday, 30th July 2023.
Drawing its vibrant characters from a medley of much-loved Dr Seuss books, Seussical Jr is a veritable smorgasbord of non-stop music, laughter and feel-good fun. Dr Seuss, an icon in children’s literature for over six decades, is renowned for his imaginative use of language, delightful rhyme, and infectious humour. His creations, like The Cat in the Hat, Horton Hears a Who, Green Eggs and Ham, and countless others have laid the foundation for many a child’s reading journey, introducing them to an enchanting realm of characters and uplifting concepts.
Breathe life into your imagination with Seuss’s timeless wisdom: “Oh, the thinks you can think! Think and wonder and think!” Embrace the uniqueness that is you, as Dr Seuss rightly said, “Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.” And remember, “You’re off to great places. Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting… so get on your way!”
Directors Jill and Keith passionately believe that “The Peoples Theatre strives to educate younger minds in order to create a stronger generation through the medium of theatre.” This is all while having a proper jol in the process, and basking in the magical allure of live performance.
Designer Grant Knottenbelt has taken on the task of morphing Dr Seuss’s unmistakable, quirky pages into a captivating stage set. Meanwhile, Merry Whillier, Sean McGrath, and Luciano Zuppa have worked their magic to craft the eye-catching costumes. Ian Mills is the Choreographer, with Coenraad Rall taking the baton as Musical Director.
The star-studded cast features some of South Africa’s finest theatrical talent, including Luciano Zuppa, Nonhlanhla “Noni” Mkhonto, Patricia Lerato Hlongwane, Lesedi Mpshe, and more. And let’s not forget our wonderful kids cast, learners from various schools who will all be showcasing their talent for the first time on the Peoples Theatre stage.
