Well, it’s time to cue the lights, dust off the theatre seats, and prepare for a grand reveal that’s set to enchant the world of ballet. The celebrated Joburg Ballet is pirouetting into an exciting new phase, and I am absolutely thrilled to bring you this news.
Ladies and gentlemen, please roll out the red carpet for Joburg Ballet’s newly minted Chief Executive Officer, the distinguished Elroy Fillis-Bell. Known for his work at the renowned Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria, this talented man brings with him a world of experience and a proven track record of success.

Now, let’s delve a little deeper into the narrative of Elroy Fillis-Bell, who brings with him more than just a curriculum vitae filled with prestigious titles. He embodies the spirit of an artist, having co-founded the Bridgetown Theatre Company and now working towards his Master of Arts in Cultural Policy and Management at Wits University.
Elroy’s repertoire includes an impressive list of reputable organisations where he has left an indelible imprint. This man has performed his managerial magnum opus at the Suidoosterfees Arts Festival in Cape Town, the Arena Stage at the Mead Centre for American Theatre in Washington, D.C., and the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation (DALRO), among others.
Not content with simply working in the arts, Elroy also champions the cause of arts workers through his role on the board of Lawyers for the Arts South Africa (LASA). This organisation focuses on fortifying legal representation for arts workers, ensuring they are not left dancing alone in the dark.
Elroy’s enthusiasm for his new role is palpable. He is eager to work with the Joburg Ballet’s diverse cast of dancers, partners, funders, and audiences. He believes that ballet, like all arts, has the potential to transform experiences and catalyse social change and development.
As we mark the beginning of a new era, it is also important to pay homage to the past. The beloved Artistic Director, Iain MacDonald, recently bid adieu to the Joburg Ballet. Iain’s creative genius and dedicated leadership have been instrumental in shaping the ballet company we love today.
Speaking of love, prepare for a spectacle of passion and tragedy. The Joburg Ballet is returning to the stage of the Joburg Theatre from Friday, 30 June to Sunday, 9 July, presenting eight breathtaking performances of the classic Romeo and Juliet.
Join me as we step into this new chapter of the Joburg Ballet’s narrative under the inspiring leadership of Elroy Fillis-Bell. We’re on the cusp of an exciting new era, but we remain steadfast in our commitment to the transformative power of ballet.
