A Year After My Covid: Long Covid

I have been struggling with long covid for a long time. It’s been a year since I have had my covid and I just never really recovered fully. Every day is a new day, you honestly don’t know what you are going to be getting. Can you taste the food, can you smell the rain, can you stand up without wanting to faint. Will I be able to remember where I left my car keys or will I forget my own damn surname?

People think that all variants of covid are like the latest omicron where it is very few after-effects. While many people like myself suffer from the Delta variant still. Who knows what the next variant might bring u?

#LongCovid – I had my covid back in January 2021, I was ridiculously ill. Lost taste and smell, and really struggled. Last Year around June i was diagnosed with Long Covid, it was ruining my life. Extreme fatigue, nausea, dizzyness, brain fog to the extreme. Every day was hell.

A year later, and every single day I do not know if I will be able to smell or taste. Every day it's a shock to me if it happens or if it doesn't happen. I have become so numb to it though. People give me food and ask how it tastes and by default, I say oh it's lovely!

People ask me how their fragrance smells and I again say oh it's lovely! – It's a hectic frustration. The other day I ate food that was "off" and I didn't taste it. Or the one day my food was burning on the stove, and I only saw it when I saw smoke 🤣 I couldn't smell it.

On the days I do have the sense of smell, I tend to become overloaded by the sensation. I walked into a mall and smelled coffee and became so excited, then smelled fragrances and other things then suddenly i reverted to a panic attack because it just became too much to process.

With my taste, I eat spicy food with lots of chilies almost daily, I tend to either taste some of it or at least experience the tingling sensation. Imagine eating cardboard daily, then you eat rubber and then you eat thin A4 Paper. That's how meals feel to me most of the time.

Also after a year of having #LongCovid issues, and smell and taste issues, you tend to just start lying about it because people who aren't experiencing it cannot fully grasp when you try to explain what you are going through. So you just lie to make your own life easier.

OH and let me not forget the phantom tastes I have. Water that has a mint chocolaty taste or coffee where I taste cheesecake. My mind is basically saying "wtf are we tasting, lets go through every taste I know!"

#LongCovid sucks. Covid sucks. Living a life feeling like you wanna pass out or thinking you are going insane because of your brain fog making you forget stuff silly stuff, like my surname once, is absolute hell. So for those who have ever had covid, check for symptoms! Be Safe.

Covid Long Haulers come from all walks of life, age groups, races, and health. Many have asymptomatic covid and months later feel overwhelmed by life and regularly feel ill, not knowing it is actually long covid. People overlook the obvious signs sometimes… like brain fog!

So what can we do? Nothing. Except treat the symptoms. Try to live healthier lives. Do everything possible to NOT get it again. This is still very new for many people. Doctors will try their best but most say, wait it out it seems.

I did however create a weird "tic" of one single hiccup after my covid. Where a few times a day I would utter out one hiccup that sounds 100% fake, inverted weird squeaky noise. It has become more frequent and most likely need to go see a neurologist to figure out if it's related

but in the meantime, Living my best life as best as I can. Still cooking. Still going into nature. Still ensuring my health remains taken care of. This too shall pass. Eventually. Not much else that you can do right?
