REVIEW: The Bagel Street, Morning Glen Mall JHB

Trying out the new home of Bagel Street at Morning Glen Mall in Johannesburg.

Inspired by New York, Bagel Street creates delicious lifestyle food with their Bagels. Something quite unique, bursting with flavour and the drinks to equally quench your thirst.

But first, What is a Bagel? Isn’t this just one of the most boring bread you can find out there? What’s so special about them?

A #bagel also historically spelt beigel, is a bread product originating in the Jewish communities of Poland. It is traditionally shaped by hand into the form of a ring from yeasted wheat dough, roughly hand-sized, that is first boiled for a short time in water and then baked.

What sets bagels apart from other types of bread is the fact that they are boiled. Some imitations are steamed, but they do not have the same chewy and crunchy crust and are not true bagels. However, the most important thing to remember is that the bagel has to be round to even be considered a bagel.

Bagels, also travel a lot!

Bagels have been taken into space. Astronaut Gregory Chamitoff took bagels from his hometown of Montreal along on a trip in the Space Shuttle in 2008

Luckily, for us. We do not have to go as far as New York, or even space for a delicious fresh bagel. Bagel Street certainly delivers.

Upon entering the building they take covid regulated precautions to ensure your safety. The staff was friendly and polite. The establishment was packed to the brim with customers upon my first visit, keeping the staff quite busy, but still mindful to ensure all guests were attended to. My second visit (yes I went there AGAIN) was much more relaxed but the same excellent service with friendly staff to greet you.

The Food

With a vast variety of food to choose from, their menu showcases something for everyone. From sweet to savoury. Since I am not a meat-eater, I chose to treat myself to a burger with their “Parkway #Vegetarian Burger”. A Potato, corn, and peas burger patty in a freshly baked bagel with some fries.

The portion seemed a bit small at first, but it really hits the spot once you are have received it. Perfect size for a hungry monster to devour all the deliciousness.

And the most delicious French Vanilla Mochas and Swiss Chocolate Lates

The Price

With such an extensive menu for a smaller establishment, they certainly ensure your value for money. What you get is worth far more than what you pay for.

My Rating

I proudly can say that the meal was delicious, and will definitely return back for more. Especially to try out their Choc Nutella Bagels!

I give them a 9 out of 10

You can find them at MORNING GLEN MALL, the Ground floor near entrance 2.
